Chlorine ions in strong oxidizing acids can cause pitting on the surface of stainless steel pipe fittings and form gray-black spots. The appearance of spots is proof that the stainless steel coating of the fittings has been corroded, 

it is recommended to maintain or replace the new fittings as soon as possible.
